TotalEnergies Incubation Grant
TotalEnergies (TTE) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have established the DTU - TotalEnergies Excellence Center for Clean Energy (DTEC), a new research and educational initiative with the shared ambition of accelerating development and innovation in the fields of energy, sustainability, and the environment.
To enhance our partnership, TotalEnergies is launching a call for proposals and is inviting the DTU research community to submit proposals of innovative research projects. Ideas submitted to this call for proposals should advance innovative approaches in the field of energy and sustainability and are intended to be of low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL).
TotalEnergies anticipates giving at least two research grants of up to 350 000 euros each for a period of 2 years. In the event of promising results, a continuation of the funding beyond the 2 years may be possible.
Project proposals that will be considered must:
- be submitted by permanent employees of DTU with PI status
- lie in the topic areas
- not be used to fund PhD projects
For the successful applications, TotalEnergies will, at the discretion of the applicant, offer regular opportunities for technical engagement and discussions, and access to data.
Eligible Topic Areas
Topic Area 1: Energy Storage and Efficiency
This topic seeks to develop innovative solutions for both electricity and heat storage. While the call for proposals is open to all projects focused on disruptive technologies in these areas, there are three areas of particular interest to TotalEnergies:

Long duration energy storage

Heat recovery and storage

Petro-chemical process electrification
Topic Area 2: Circularity and Carbon Dioxide Removal
This topic seeks to develop the next generation of carbon removal technologies. While the call for proposals is open to all projects focused on disruptive technologies in these areas, there are three areas of particular interest to TotalEnergies:

Novel capture-conversion technologies

Innovation in CO2 storage

Mitigation of methane emissions
Topic Area 3: New Fuels and Energy Carriers
This topic seeks to develop the next generation fuels and energy carriers. While the call for proposals is open to all projects focused on disruptive technologies in these areas, there are two areas of particular interest to TotalEnergies:
Submission Instructions
The application process is divided into two phases. In the first phase, applicants are asked to submit an abstract (1-2 pages) on this platform. The sections to be filled in online can be prepared offline using this template.
For applications selected for the second phase, a more elaborate description of the research project (5-7 pages) will be required.

Budget and Eligible Costs
Applicants must only submit a budget in Phase 2 of this call for proposals. The respecfive budget
shall give an overview that outlines the overall expenses for the acfivifies and work package of the
project over 24 months. In general, these include the following budget items:
- Salaries: Scienfific salaries (excluding PhD students) and technical support salaries
- Operafing expenses
- Administrafion expenses and overhead with a total anficipated rate of 44%
Please note that the total grant budget of 350 000 euros includes all direct and indirect costs.
Evaluation Process
The evaluation and selection of the abstracts and research proposals for the grants will be done by review panels with equal representation from DTU and TotalEnergies and with the involvement of external experts. The evaluation is carried out as a double-anonymous review, meaning that both the identity of the applicants and the reviewers is kept anonymous.

Ownership
By submitting an abstract and a full proposal, the applicants agree to the evaluation process carried out by TotalEnergies and DTU. Throughout this process all intellectual property rights and copyrights of the submitted abstracts and proposals will remain with the applicants. After the announcement of the granted projects, all abstracts, proposals, and reviews will be deleted, and no record maintained by TotalEnergies.
The intellectual properties rights on the funded projects will be subject to the negotiation between DTU and TotalEnergies and the establishment of R&D contracts.

Other Notes
During registration to the platform and submission of abstracts and proposal, the applicants need to provide some basic personal details (name, email, position, etc.). This information is collected only to be able to handle the application and evaluation process or to later communicate with applicants about matters related to the selection. This information must, by law, be kept until the call for proposals will be concluded and subsequently be deleted.
